Mouth cancer, also known as oral cancer, is a head and neck cancer which occurs primarily in people aged 40-60, though it can strike at any age. Signals of mouth cancer may include lumps, bumps or knobs of cancerous tissue in the oral cavity, oral sores that won’t get better, and loose teeth. Every regular checkup with our team includes a screening, but the following are some additional things you might want to know about mouth cancer.

Most importantly, you should know the risk factors associated with mouth cancer. (An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!) The highest risk factors of mouth cancer are drug, alcohol and tobacco use. If you drink or smoke and are between 40 and 60 years old, think seriously about eliminating these habits; it may save your life! Other risk factors include human papillomavirus (HPV), excess sun exposure to the lips and weakened immune systems.

As always, you should visit a professional dental practitioner if you think you have mouth cancer or if you have several of the risk factors, but there are some things you can do at home. Using a mirror, pull apart your cheeks and inspect your mouth’s roof, cheeks, gums, floor, tongue and throat; check for any lumps, bumps or knobs. Also, feel around on your neck and jaw for any knobs.
